Huntsville a ‘charming’ rocket city in the Appalachians

HUNTSVILLE – Huntsville was recently named one of eight “Most Charming Cities in the Appalachians” by map experts World Atlas.

Ranked alongside Chattanooga, Knoxville and Johnson City, Tenn.; Greenville, S.C.; Asheville, N.C.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Youngstown, Ohio; and a twist of irony: World Atlas said Huntsville’s space program, specifically, is what makes the “Rocket City” charming.

In north Alabama, Madison and Limestone counties are part of the picturesque and diverse Appalachian Region. It incorporates 13 states and stretches for 206,000 square miles from southern New York to northeastern Mississippi and all of West Virginia.

The region is known for “charming cities,” often defined as having a balance between order and variety.

In addition to its space program and defense contractors, Huntsville revels in a vibrant music scene; a flourishing competitive sports scene; a dynamic nightlife; plenty of outdoor adventures; scads of attractions and festivals; and ample space at Big Spring Park, Toyota Field and the Orion Amphitheater to commune with art, culture, nature and baseball.

Whether you are visiting art galleries or zip lining off Monte Sano, it is time to embrace Huntsville’s “charming” side.
