Huntsville approves streetscaping improvements for Monroe Street corridor

HUNTSVILLE — To create a “more vibrant environment,” the city of Huntsville has approved a contract to make streetscaping improvements to a major downtown corridor, officials announced.

The project by Miller & Miller will span 1,000 feet of Monroe Street between Williams and Clinton avenues and include the installation of sidewalks, streetlights, landscaping, irrigation and asphalt resurfacing.

The work, which includes two large decorative pedestrian crossings — one near the parking deck and the other near Big Spring Park, is expected to be completed within 90 days after notice to proceed is issued.

“We’re excited to bring these improvements to Monroe Street, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “With the ongoing redevelopment in the area, these upgrades will help create a more vibrant, welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.”

This project is part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the area, especially with the final completion of the Trilogy Hotel across from the Von Braun Center, the city said. Monroe Street has already seen several redevelopment initiatives, including improvements to the Von Braun Center and a new city parking deck.
