HUNTSVILLE – Huntsville Botanical Garden, in cooperation with Autism Support of Alabama, is offering two sensory hour opportunities as part of the new features of Galaxy of Lights.
Sensory Hours will be this Sunday and Dec. 3 at 4:30 p.m. Anyone can choose to attend at this time, but these time slots are specially designated for guests with sensory sensitivities to enjoy the magic in a more comfortable setting. Regular operations will resume at 6 p.m. on those nights.
“Introducing sensory friendly hours for Galaxy of Lights is another step in our commitment to accessibility and inclusion,” said Botanical Garden CEO Susan L. Wagner. “By creating a calmer, more intentional environment, we’re ensuring that all members of our community can connect with the beauty, joy, and magic of the season in a way that feels comfortable and welcoming.”
During these hours, the lights will shine brightly, but all music will be at a reduced volume to create a calmer experience (narration on the Evergreen Express cannot be adjusted). ASA will provide earplugs for those who need further noise reduction, while supplies last.
A limited number of sensory toys will be available for checkout at the Admission Desk and complimentary vouchers for hot chocolate will be provided by ASA (first come, first served).
This new amenity supports HBG’s continuing endeavors to make improvements to accessibility at the Garden.
“This is truly significant — our first-ever Sensory Night at the Garden,” said Jenny Morris, executive director of Autism Support of Alabama. “As someone who has been part of the Garden community for more than two decades and as the parent of an adult on the autism spectrum, I’m deeply grateful for this chance to open the holiday experience to individuals with sensory sensitivities. Recognizing the special needs community and anyone who faces sensory challenges means so much.
“This beloved Christmas tradition now becomes more accessible to families across North Alabama, allowing them to share in its magic.”
