The Huntsville City Board of Education has approved the purchase of 82 acres in the Hampton Cove area to support future school construction, taking another step in the district’s long-range plan to keep pace with one of Alabama’s fastest-growing communities.
The board voted Tuesday to acquire the property north of the Raceway at the intersection of Highway 431 and Old Big Cove Road for $3.68 million. District leaders say the site is expected to support a new elementary or middle school as part of the district’s 10-year capital plan, with an anticipated opening date of 2033.
Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton said the purchase reflects the district’s effort to get ahead of growth rather than react to it.
“This purchase represents another important step in planning for the future growth of Huntsville City Schools,” Sutton said. “As our community continues to grow, especially in the Hampton Cove area, we want to ensure we are proactively preparing for the long-term needs of students and families.”
Huntsville City Schools currently serves more than 23,000 students across 43 schools, including 26 pre-K and elementary schools, 11 middle and junior high schools, six high schools and one virtual school.
