Huntsville Music Office will kick off Design Week Huntsville 2026 with a high-energy opening night event featuring a hometown performance by Paul McDonald and his band, The Mourning Doves.
The April 13 event, set for 6 to 9 p.m. at The Lumberyard, marks the official start of the four-day Design Week celebration, a citywide series of free events focused on creativity, collaboration and innovation.
As the event’s official music partner, the Huntsville Music Office is leading the Opening Night festivities, which organizers say will set the tone for a week highlighting the city’s expanding design sector and growing creative economy.
McDonald, a Huntsville native who gained national recognition for his distinctive voice and stage presence, said returning home for the event carries special meaning.
“Growing up in Huntsville, it means a great deal to come home and be part of Design Week,” McDonald said. “I’m incredibly proud to see how the city is investing in its creative community and elevating the music and arts scene. It’s an honor to be included in something that’s bringing so much energy and inspiration to a place that shaped me.”
In addition to live music, Opening Night will feature a vendor market showcasing local artists, the annual Ink Wars competition and opportunities for networking among creatives and industry professionals.
Huntsville Music Officer Matt Mandrella said the partnership reflects the city’s growing reputation as a destination for both emerging and established talent.
“This event showcases the creativity, innovation and talent that continues to emerge from Huntsville within a really fun atmosphere,” Mandrella said. “Paul’s excitement about returning for a homecoming show is especially meaningful because it reflects the growing national traction of Huntsville as a market that established artists are intentionally routing through. We’re proud to support Design Week Huntsville and amplify the creative professionals who make this community so special.”
Design Week Huntsville runs for four days with events across the city, bringing together designers, artists, entrepreneurs and community members to celebrate Huntsville’s evolving cultural landscape.
