Huntsville Havoc to celebrate 30th anniversary of Channel Cats

HUNTSVILLE — Black and teal.

Thirty years.

One iconic name.

And it all comes back Friday night to the Von Braun Center as the Huntsville Havoc celebrate the 30th anniversary of the legendary Huntsville Channel Cats.

In the 1995-96 season, the Channel Cats joined the Southern Hockey League and set the tone for professional hockey in the Rocket City.

Powered by Jonathan Dubois, who was the team’s top scorer (28 goals, 55 assists, 83 points) and led the Cats with 230 penalty minutes; along with 30-plus goal scorers Alex Kholomeyev and Mike Gambel; and goaltender Troy Seibel, the Channel Cats won the Southern Hockey League’s first and only championship, as the SHL folded later that year.

To help celebrate, Havoc players will be wearing specialty Channel Cats jerseys and welcoming former Channel Cats players back to the barn for a night Huntsville hockey fans won’t want to miss.

Adding to the on-ice excitement, the Havoc (13-6-4, 30 points) is riding a three-game winning streak and tied for first place with Pensacola (14-4-2, 30 points) in the Southern Professional Hockey League. On Friday, the Havoc and Ice Flyers will meet in a battle for first. Faceoff is 7 p.m.

Just like the action on the ice, tickets are going fast.
