Huntsville high schools getting full turf baseball, softball fields

HUNTSVILLE — High schools in the Huntsville City School System are about to receive some major athletic upgrades.

The system said this year all five of its high schools will be equipped with full turf baseball and softball fields.

An outside organization visited and evaluated the fields at each of the schools, according to Mac Howard, athletic director for Huntsville City Schools. The company decided on the order of school fields to be replaced.

“They chose that the first action that we were going to do was Huntsville High and Lee High,” Howard said. “They were in need the most. Jemison, Columbia, and Grissom were the fields that were made last. Lee and Huntsville are our two oldest high schools and our oldest buildings and have the oldest athletic fields. Then Columbia and then May Jemison, then Grissom.

“This year we’ll have both Lee’s and Huntsville High’s done, softball and baseball. In June, we’ll start with Columbia, Grissom, and Mae Jemison.”
