Huntsville International Airport warns public of phone scam spoofing official number

Huntsville International Airport is warning North Alabama residents about an ongoing phone scam in which callers are spoofing the airport’s official phone number and falsely offering free airline tickets.

Airport officials said the fraudulent calls have been reported across the region and are not associated with Huntsville International Airport or any airline operating at the airport.

According to airport officials, scammers are using technology that makes the calls appear to originate from the airport’s official phone number. Callers may claim the recipient has won free flights or must act quickly to secure a special travel offer.

The airport emphasized that it does not call members of the public to offer free airline tickets, request payment or ask for personal or financial information.

Officials are urging anyone who receives one of these calls to hang up immediately and not provide any personal or financial information. Residents are also advised not to press any buttons or follow instructions given by the caller and not to return calls to any number provided during the scam.

Those who receive a scam call are encouraged to report it to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov and to the Federal Communications Commission through its spoofing complaint process.

Anyone who believes they may have shared banking or credit card information should contact their financial institution immediately.

Huntsville International Airport said it is monitoring the situation and is asking media outlets to help spread awareness to protect the public from fraud.
