Acclaimed American artist and graphic novelist Miles Hyman, known for his adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” will be featured in a new exhibition at the Huntsville Museum of Art this fall.

“Miles Hyman: Cinematic Visions” will run Sept. 18 through Feb. 28, bringing together a selection of Hyman’s paintings and drawings influenced by cinema, literature, fine art and everyday observation.

Hyman, the grandson of Jackson, created the authorized full-color graphic novel adaptation of her iconic 1948 short story “The Lottery,” published in 2016.

His work often uses dramatic light and shadow and focuses on streets, interiors and figures caught in moments of tension, leaving the narrative open to the viewer.

“I hosted an exhibition of Miles’ artwork in Vermont in 2006, and I am pleased to introduce his remarkable artistic talent to the Huntsville audience,” said Christopher Madkour, executive director of the Huntsville Museum of Art.

“His work draws us in with mystery and atmosphere, but it is what we imagine beyond the frame that makes these works so engaging.”

Huntsville Museum of Art Chief Curator Natalie Mault Mead said that open-ended quality is central to the exhibition.

“Each painting can feel like a still from a film or a page from a novel,” Mead said. “Hyman gives us just enough information to enter the scene, then leaves space for our imagination to take over.”

Hyman will be at the museum Sept. 17 for an opening lecture and reception from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a book signing. Admission is free for museum members and $25 for nonmembers.

The exhibition is organized by the Huntsville Museum of Art and sponsored by Sally and Bob Arthur, with additional support from Kathleen and Doug Mariboe.
