HUNTSVILLE – The Huntsville Police Department advises motorists to expect delays Saturday in downtown Huntsville for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Road closures will start at 10 a.m. and the parade begins at 11 a.m. at Lot K on the corner of Woodson Street and Holmes Avenue. As the route winds through downtown, impacted streets include Jefferson Street from Monroe Street to South Side Square, Washington Street from Southside Square to Monroe Street and Meridian Street from Monroe Street to Cleveland Avenue.
HPD asks residents to use caution due to heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic. All roads will reopen by noon.
Organizers of the parade, the Irish Society of North Alabama, have renamed the event Ellen McAnelly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Parade. McAnelly founded the parade, now entering its 47th year.
The parade will commence rain or shine, but forecasts call for clear skies. Only once in 46 previous years has it rained on the actual parade.
Parade organizers have created a Parade Spectator Guide that includes a route map and parking information.
The Irish Society of North Alabama will also be participating at “Paddy’s at the Pitch” on St. Patrick’s Day with the Huntsville City Football Club at Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium from 2-6 p.m.
Inaugural HerPower Walk
Lace up your walking shoes and join Huntsville Parks & Recreation for the inaugural HerPower Walk on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. in Big Spring Park.
Men and women of all ages are invited to the event, which celebrates Women’s History Month with a free 3-mile walk. Food trucks will have concessions for purchase and gift bags will be provided while supplies last.
The walk offers participants a chance to enjoy the beauty of the park while celebrating the remarkable women who enrich the lives of citizens, from the bustling corridors of Redstone Arsenal and Research Park to small business owners, teachers, medical workers and Parks & Recreation employees.
“The HerPower Walk embodies our commitment to fostering inclusivity in our programming,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “It’s another testament to our dedication to creating events where everyone feels welcomed and valued.”
