HUNTSVILLE — In a move to strengthen operations and improve response time and community accessibility to a growing South Huntsville, the Huntsville Police Department’s South Precinct headquarters is planning a move.
While the new precinct is still in the early planning stages, the selected property is strategically located south of the Logan Drive and Commerce Parkway intersection, behind the Kroger shopping center and just south of Community Fellowship Baptist Church, HPD said.
“The new South Precinct is about strengthening our operations,” Chief Kirk Giles said. “From response times to accessibility, this facility will help us to continue delivering the highest level of service to our community.”
Access to the parkway has been a key factor in the location decision, providing convenient connectivity for both law enforcement operations and residents in the south Huntsville community.
The City Council recently gave the green light to buy the property for $435,973.50.
“We look forward to welcoming the South Precinct to the South Parkway,” District 3 Council Member Jennie Robinson said. “There is a lot of growth in the South Parkway area especially in Hays Farm. A police precinct so close to existing neighborhoods and new developments will make it easier for neighbors to join HPD in watching out for one another.”
Details such as the facility’s square footage, exact address and construction timeline are still being determined.
Once funding for design work is secured, city officials estimate around 10-12 months for design and then another 12-14 for construction.
