Huntsville, known as the Rocket City, is quickly receiving a new accolade: a tourist destination.

Over the last decade, Alabama tourism spending has grown from roughly $11 billion annually to nearly $25 billion, with Huntsville and Madison County continuing to shine as one of the state’s leading destinations for visitors.

According to the 2025 Alabama Tourism Economic Report, visitors spent a record $24.9 billion across Alabama in 2025 as the state welcomed 29.2 million travelers. Madison County ranked among Alabama’s top tourism markets, generating approximately $2.4 billion in visitor spending and drawing nearly 4 million visitors during the year.

The report placed Madison County among the five largest tourism markets in Alabama alongside Baldwin, Jefferson, Mobile, and Montgomery counties. Together, those counties accounted for more than 72% of the state’s travelers.

Major attractions such as the U.S. Space & Rocket Center continue to serve as major draws for visitors traveling to the region, while entertainment venues and mixed-use developments have expanded the area’s tourism appeal in recent years.

Venues including the Orion Amphitheater, Toyota Field, and the Von Braun Center have helped attract concerts, youth sporting events, conferences, and large-scale entertainment programming to the area.

Huntsville-Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau President and CEO Charles Winters said Madison County ranked as the second most visited county in Alabama and noted that sports tourism generated an estimated $50 million in economic impact locally last year.

As Huntsville continues expanding nationally as a center for aerospace, technology, and defense, tourism officials increasingly see the city’s quality-of-life amenities and entertainment offerings becoming part of its broader appeal.

Once primarily known for rockets and research, Huntsville is increasingly building a reputation as a destination where visitors can spend a weekend attending concerts, exploring museums, dining downtown, and experiencing one of Alabama’s fastest-growing cities firsthand.
