Huntsville Utilities volunteers make ‘impact’ at Lynn Fanning Elementary

MERIDIANVILLE — Giving back to the community, Huntsville Utilities hosted its first “HU Impact Day” over the weekend.

Volunteers from Huntsville Utilities and their families helped beautify Lynn Fanning Elementary School in Madison County.

“This is a way for us to give back to the community,” said Todd Long with Huntsville Utilities Public Relations. “A lot of people just think of us as the big brick building downtown and there’s more to us than that.

“We’ve got nearly 800 employees. That’s a pretty significant number of people with a lot of different tools and causes they believe in.”

Dozens of volunteers worked for more than three hours  Saturday morning planting, weeding and mulching for the elementary school in Meridianville.

Supporting the community has been an important part of Huntsville Utilities. Citing the frequent social media hashtag “#communitypowered”, Long aid there’s more to Huntsville Utilities than just supplying the electricity, the water and the natural gas.

“These are all Huntsville Utilities employees and their families,” he said. This is something we can do to give back to the community we live in, too.”

Lynn Fanning Elementary School Principal Wynetta Ford, who was also taking part in the landscaping efforts, said the day was special for the school and the community.

“We appreciate Huntsville Utilities coming out today. This has been awesome,” said Ford. “It has almost brought me to tears to see how much time and effort they’re putting in, so many people are involved in making today possible.”

Ford also emphasized the importance of taking pride in their school.

“This is important because I want our teachers, I want our students, I want the community members to be able to come into Lynn Fanning and see that we have pride in our school,” she said. “And that Lynn Fanning is a school that we definitely, definitely feel so much love here and it’s a family oriented school.”

While a date for a second HU Impact Day hasn’t been set, Long said it will be an annual event for Huntsville Utilities.  Follow more Huntsville Utilities news on social media and here.
