Huntsville’s Sandra Moon Complex renovation entering final phase

City of Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE — The former Grissom High School auditorium will soon be receiving some much-needed refurbishment.

The City of Huntsville announced Thursday that the Sandra Moon Community Complex renovation project, part of which includes upgrading the auditorium, is entering the final phase.

The changes include reducing the auditorium to create a more intimate 611-seat theater with a new lobby and extensive improvements on back-of-house facilities to accommodate different types of events. A 300-seat event center will be constructed on the site of the school’s lunchroom as well.

KPS Group of Huntsville is the architect and Fite Building Company of Decatur is the general contractor for the $31.3 million project.

Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.

The project also calls for refurbishing the two gymnasiums in the school and enhancing the exterior with landscaping and lighting. The recreational facilities will include a permanent home for special population activities.  The work will also bring the project area into ADA compliance.
