The Huntsville City Council has approved the rezoning of the proposed Harris Farms development in north Huntsville, allowing developers to move forward with plans for a large residential community on more than 500 acres.

The project calls for approximately 1,800 housing units on 505 acres located north of State Route 255, west of Memorial Parkway and near the under-construction North Village retail development.

According to the City of Huntsville, the privately developed community will feature a mix of housing options along with amenities including a resort-style swimming pool, pickleball courts, dog parks and a network of greenways.

City officials said the development is expected to be built over the next 15 to 20 years, reflecting the scale of the project as north Huntsville continues to grow.

The rezoning approval allows the project to advance into the design phase as north Huntsville continues to see significant residential and commercial growth.

In other action, the City Council introduced plans to annex approximately 536.8 acres east of U.S. 72 and north and south of Little Cove Road.

The proposed annexation would support a planned residential development in the McMullen Cove area. The council is expected to consider final approval of the annexation at its Aug. 13 meeting.
