Ice-capades: Huntsville’s Skating in the Park to return for its 14th season

HUNTSVILLE — Lace ’em up, skating fans. It’s almost time for one of Huntsville’s most popular holiday traditions.

That’s right. Skating in the Park is back this month for its 14th year.

The rink is open Nov. 21 through Jan. 4 for pirouettes, double axels or just “scooting”. The fun includes Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

“We are thrilled to open another season of Skating in the Park,” said Skating in the Park Advisory Board Chair Hank Isenberg. “The city of Huntsville, our sponsors, the Skating in the Park Advisory Board and Huntsville Museum of Art staff work incredibly hard to make this event a safe and fun activity for our community.

“We are grateful for the continued support that makes this beloved holiday tradition possible.”

Located directly behind the Huntsville Museum of Art in Big Spring Park, Skating in the Park will be open seven days a week, including holidays. Rink hours vary throughout the season and can be found at hsvmuseum.org.

Admission is $15 for ages 10 and up, and $5 for ages nine and under. Skate rentals are $5, but visitors are able to bring their own skates to avoid the skate rental fee. Scooter rentals are available for $5.

“Skating in the Park brings our community together each year to celebrate the holiday season in the heart of downtown Huntsville,” said Andrea Petroff, director of development at the Huntsville Museum of Art. “We are proud to host this festive annual event and look forward to celebrating another magical season with our friends and neighbors.

“Skating in the Park adds vibrancy to our city’s holiday calendar and creates lasting memories for families across North Alabama.”

Throughout the season, the rink will host a variety of special events, including DJ Nights, Family Nights, a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration, and more.

After skating, visitors are invited to warm up inside the Huntsville Museum of Art (HMA) and explore its holiday exhibitions, including “Days of Punk: Photographs by Michael Grecco.”

Museum guests who show their skating wristbands in the museum store in the HMA lobby, will receive a 10% discount on all items. The store will have a variety of specialty items, including “Days of Punk” merchandise, art supplies, and holiday gifts.
