‘Impactful winter storm’ predicted for region with ‘accumulating’ snow

HUNTSVILLE — Confidence is increasing for an impactful winter storm across the Tennessee Valley that would bring accumulating snow to the region, perhaps mixed with sleet and freezing rain in some areas, the National Weather Service Huntsville office said this morning.

There is a 70-90% chance of at least an inch of snow but less chances of 3 inches or more late Thursday night through Saturday morning for all of northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.

A storm system traveling along the Gulf Coast will spread snow across the Tennessee Valley, the forecasters said, perhaps beginning as early as late Thursday night. There is an 80-90% chance for precipitation regionwide on Friday, but it will be ending from west to east early Saturday.

“At this point, snow is the most likely precipitation type north of the Tennessee River, with an eventual transition to a wintry mix possibly occurring south of the river,” the forecast office said. “Concern for accumulating snow (and perhaps sleet and freezing rain for portions of the area) is increasing.”

Meanwhile, the winds are expected to gradually subside by late Wednesday afternoon. High temperatures will be in the 35- to 40-degree range (lower 30s atop the Cumberland Plateau). Lows Wednesday will in the mid 20s with wind chills of 10-20 degrees. Thursday’s lows will be around 15 to 20 degrees and wind chills of 5 to 15 degrees.
