MONTGOMERY — Several North Alabama cities are among cities, counties and other entities statewude to share more than $21.6 million in federal Transportation Alternatives Program funds.
According to Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Transportation, $21,620,648.91 has been awarded for on-road and off-road improvements for pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motorized forms of transportation.
“For a growing number of Alabamians who walk or use bicycles for health and recreation or to travel to work or school, the safety of their travel routes is an important concern,” Ivey said. “Therefore, I am pleased to join ALDOT in announcing this significant grant to build and enhance sidewalks and walking spaces in more than 30 communities, large and small, spanning the length of our state.”
The municipalities in North Alabama receiving money for their projects are:
- Albertville – $800,000 for ADA downtown sidewalk improvements
- Fort Payne – $800,000 for sidewalk improvements along Gault Avenue
- Fyffe – $480,000 for ADA-compliant sidewalk improvements on west side of Church Street
- Owens Cross Roads – $148,437 for ADA sidewalk improvements along Wilson Mann Road
- Rainsville – $800,000 for sidewalk improvements along the north side of Alabama Highway 35 (Main Street East
- Russellville – $463,284.38 for sidewalks along Washington Avenue, Jackson Avenue and Montgomery Street.
The Transportation Alternatives Program is a federally funded program administered by ALDOT.
Projects such as bike and pedestrian mobility, streetscaping and other non-traditional transportation improvements are eligible for TAP funds administered by ALDOT.
