The Alabama Department of Transportation is inviting North Alabama residents to help shape the state’s transportation priorities through 2050 during a public meeting next week in Huntsville.

ALDOT’s North Region will host a public involvement meeting on Tuesday, July 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the North Region Office, 1525 Perimeter Parkway. The informal open house will allow residents to review plans, ask questions and provide comments that will help develop Alabama’s next Statewide Transportation Plan.

The long-range plan evaluates Alabama’s transportation network and identifies maintenance and improvement strategies through 2050. The document serves as a guide for how transportation funding is invested over the next two decades while supporting the state’s economic development, mobility and sustainability goals.

The plan addresses a broad range of transportation infrastructure, including highways, bridges, public transit, rail, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, freight movement, airports and waterways.

According to ALDOT, the planning process helps identify both current and future transportation needs while prioritizing investments that improve safety, reduce congestion and strengthen economic growth across the state.

Potential areas addressed in the plan include safer roads and bridges, improved freight movement, enhanced hurricane evacuation routes, airport improvements, expanded walking and bicycling access where appropriate, and preservation of existing infrastructure before it deteriorates.

Transportation officials said public input is a critical component of the planning process because residents often identify local transportation challenges and priorities that may not be apparent through engineering studies and traffic data alone.

Representatives from ALDOT will be available throughout the meeting to answer questions and receive public comments.

The North Region includes Cherokee, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall and Morgan counties.
