MADISON — A Kansas City Barbecue Society Backyard Competition is coming to Discovery Middle School next month as part of the Back to School Barbecue Bash.
The event will benefit programs at DMS. The KCBS-sanctioned competition will feature three categories – chicken, ribs and pork – that will be judged according to appearance, taste and tenderness.
“We’re still accepting teams,” said Back to School Barbecue Bash organizer Adam Sweatman. “Anyone with a grill can compete. You’ll see the big, nice setups with RVs and also teams with Big Green Eggs, it’s open to everyone.”
“We are excited to see the backyard events to continue to grow in Alabama,” said Amy Acock, KCBS Director of Marketing Partnerships, Memberships, and Judge Programs. “It’s always great to see communities have a backyard barbecue competition because it doesn’t matter if you’re a first time cook or if you’ve been cooking for a long time, it brings the community together.”
The entry fee is $150 per team and $1,500 in prize money will awarded to the grand champion. There will also be prize money for first through fifth place in each category as well as a Community Choice winner.
“The Community Choice is a pork competition decided on by the attendees. You get to sample two ounces of pork from eight teams,” he said. “You get a pound of pork for a $10 ticket and get to vote on the winner.”
Applications to enter and official rules for the competition can be found on the DMS website.
The Back to School Barbecue Bash will benefit programs at Alabama’s number one-ranked middle school. Sweatman said there will also be a “Party at the Pit” with a DJ, vendors, inflatables, and kids activities.
The fee to attend is $20 per car. The event is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 at Discovery Middle School.
“We’re hoping the community turns out for this to support our programs and enjoy a day of fun.” Sweatman said.
