Well, now is your chance to get hands-on experience. Helen Keller Hospital is hosting a Robotic Surgery Showcase on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Â
This free community event will allow attendees to operate the da Vinci XI Surgical System in a simulation. According to the hospital, da Vinci surgery technology is laparoscopic, minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery that provides surgeons with enhanced vision and control, allowing a 3D high-definition view inside the patient’s body.
The da Vinci system offers more range of motion than a human wrist. The surgeon sits at the control console while the patient is in a nearby side cart containing four robotic arms and an endoscope, a thin tube with a camera at the end.
Helen Keller Hospital surgeons who specialize in robotic-assisted procedures will share brief presentations explaining how the technology helps them achieve shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and improved overall outcomes for patients.
The surgeons will discuss the benefits of robotics in general, gynecological, and urological surgery. Attendees will be able to explore the robotic approach to surgery and test-drive the robot that surgeons use with their patients.

The event will be in the main lobby of Helen Keller Hospital, 1300 S. Montgomery Ave. in Sheffield.
