TUSCUMBIA – Spring is one of the best times to visit Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve. The waterfalls are flowing and wildflowers are blooming.
The Land Trust of North Alabama is hosting a celebration Saturday at this special piece of northwest Alabama.
For more than 40 years, Jim and Faye Lacefield preserved Cane Creek Canyon’s natural resources and welcomed visitors. Their donation of the property to the Land Trust ensures its continued protection and public access.
As Earth Month winds down, the public is invited to celebrate the legacy of the Lacefields and the future of Cane Creek Canyon.Activities throughout the day feature hiking, wildflowers, food, music, and stargazing.
- 1-5 p.m.: Head onto the trails and learn about the wildflowers of Cane Creek. Volunteers will be located at various points along the trails to share information and answer questions.
- 2 p.m.: Gather at the trailhead for a welcome from Land Trust of North Alabama and the Lacefields as well as the presentation of the donation from Essity to Land Trust of North Alabama.
- 3 p.m.: Learn about the salamanders of Cane Creek with Dr. Glenn A. Marvin.
- 5 p.m.: Music and dinner by the fire at trailhead, including campfire songs and food. Bring a blanket or chairs to sit on.
- 7:30 p.m.: After the sun sets, the stargazing begins with Dr. Mel Blake.
