Liberty, Middle Tennessee State share CUSA women’s basketball regular-season title; tournament opens in Huntsville

DALLAS – Liberty University and Middle Tennessee State are sharing the Conference USA regular season championship, but the Lady Flames are the No. 1 seed at the CUSA Basketball Championships.

The tournament tips off Tuesday at the Von Braun Center’s Propst Arena in Huntsville. For tickets and information, visit ConferenceUSA.com/RocketCityHoops.

Liberty finished with a 23-6 overall record and a 16-2 conference mark. MTSU will be the No. 2 seed after earning its third consecutive CUSA regular season title with a league record of 16-2 and a 24-7 overall mark.

The two teams split their regular-season meetings but the Lady Flames earned the top seed via tiebreaker.

Championship week begins with two first-round games Tuesday. The opener is at 11:30 a.m. between No. 8 Sam Houston (12-16, 5-13 CUSA) and No. 9 Jacksonville State (10-19, 4-14 CUSA). No. 7 Kennesaw State (12-17, 7-11 CUSA) and No. 10 Texas-El Paso (11-18, 4-14 CUSA) will follow that contest at 2 p.m.

Quarterfinal action will tip off Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. as the Lady Flames will take on the winner of Sam Houston and Kennesaw State. The Lady Raiders will face off against the winner of Kennesaw State and UTEP at 2 p.m. to wrap up Wednesday’s action.

The remaining two quarterfinal games will be played Thursday as No. 4 New Mexico State (17-14, 10-8 CUSA) will face No. 5 Louisiana Tech (15-14, 8-10 CUSA) at 11:30 a.m. No. 3 Western Kentucky (22-8, 13-5 CUSA) will then match up with No. 6 Florida International (11-18, 7-11 CUSA) in the last quarterfinal contest.

The two semifinal contests are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Frida with the championship final to tip off at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
