NEW MARKET — Madison County District One Commissioner Tom Brandon and other area leaders broke ground for a community center at Sharon Johnston Park today.
“The new center will be a great benefit to the residents of District One, as well as all visitors to Madison County,” said Brandon. “The old pool house at Sharon Johnston Park is in the process of being leveled to make way for the new pool house to be built, as well as the community center. The pool house will include locker rooms, restrooms, and concession facilities for visitors to the pool; the contractor will replace all the decking around the pool, as well.
“The community center will contain two gyms that can be used for basketball, volleyball or pickleball. Upstairs will be a walking track for residents to use for free when they can’t get outside to exercise due to inclement weather.”
There will also be community rooms available for rent for birthday or team parties and other community meetings. Inside the center will be another concession area that will provide refreshments during tournaments or practices.
Consolidated Construction Co. of Huntsville will build the center and Frameworks Architecture of Decatur designed the 32,000 square-foot facility. Total cost of construction is approximately $14.2 million.
“During the construction we will do our best to have the pool open and operational for the 2025 season,” said Brandon.
