The City of Madison has opened applications for its first-ever Mayor’s Youth Council, a year-long program giving high school students a hands-on look at how local government works.
The program will bring together 30 students from public, private, and homeschool communities across Madison. Beginning in September 2026, participants will meet monthly at city facilities and community locations, exploring departments including public safety, finance, parks and recreation, and STEM. Sessions run through spring 2027 and include a closing ceremony.
Students will actively contribute through volunteer service projects benefiting the community. Each participant must attend at least one City Council meeting and observe one board, committee, or commission meeting during the year. Breakfast will be provided at each 1.5-hour session.
The program is open to rising freshmen through seniors. Applicants should have an interest in municipal government, community service, and public-sector careers. Eligible students can also register to vote at the September kickoff.
“Investing in our youth and engaging them in service is a top priority for me,” said Madison Mayor Ranea Bartlett. “I want our student residents to know about the opportunities and how they can get involved in their community.”
Local businesses and organizations can support the council by sponsoring session breakfasts or program shirts, with recognition and logo placement provided.
Applications are open through April 30, 2026. For more information or to apply, visit madisonal.gov.
