A Madison native has accomplished an incredible feat that has folks across Alabama talking.
Not only did Dr. Rachel Entrekin, an alumnus of Bob Jones High School in Madison, complete the absurd Cocodona 250-mile ultramarathon, she also won the race overall.
If winning a 250 mile race on foot weren’t enough, she also did it at a record-setting pace of 56 hours, 9 minutes and 48 seconds to average 13 minutes per mile.
Competing with 400 other runners in Arizona, Entrekin ran from Black Canyon City to Flagstaff for an elevation gain of close to 40,000 feet.

“Over her three days of domination, Entrekin reportedly stopped for sleep on just three separate occasions,” an article on the event from USA Today stated. “Each nap was less than 10 minutes long for a total of 19 minutes of shut-eye, yet she somehow kept waking up to average a 13:20 mile pace — including the stops she took.”
It’s difficult to put into words just how impressive of an accomplishment this is to even compete in the race, let alone finish, win it and set a record in the process.
The amount of not only physical, but mental fortitude shown by Entrekin is incomprehensible to most, and it’s safe to say she has made her home state very proud.
