Madison’s Civic Awareness Academy accepting applications

MADISON — Providing an opportunity for residents to “see how the sausage is made” in city government, the City of Madison is hosting its annual Madison Civic Awareness Academy.

The program, held every spring and fall, is a six-week program that provides residents with an in-depth look at the city. Participants will be given an insider’s view into the roles of municipal government, city operations, programs, departments and services, emerging issues, and volunteer opportunities.

They will be encouraged to share their thoughts and discuss concerns during the round-robin part of each session.

“The Civic Awareness Academy empowers citizens to engage in the inner workings of the municipal process,” said Mayor Paul Finley. “It’s an opportunity to educate Madison’s citizens and allow them to make informed decisions on the community.

“We value involved citizens who are willing to make a positive impact.”

The academy kicks off with orientation Oct. 10. Sessions will include guest speakers, classroom instruction, civic simulations, class discussion/ engagement activities and facility tours within the city of Madison.

The goal is to improve community transparency, trust, and participation by:

  • Making city government better understood and more accessible;
  • Introducing participants to City leaders and department heads;
  • Encouraging residents to become more involved (by serving on committees or volunteering);
  • Showcasing how the City is enhancing quality of life and is responsive to citizens; and
  • Creating meaningful two-way discussions and conversations.

Classes are Thursday nights from 5:30-8 pm. The dates and topics are:

  • Oct. 17 – Our City at Work
  • Oct. 23 – Our City Maintaining
  • Oct. 30 – Our City is Growing
  • Nov. 7 – Our City is Playing
  • Nov. 14 – Our City is Protected
  • Nov. 21 – Our City is Leading
