Madison’s Dr. Amit Chakrabarty elected president of Indian origin national physician’s group

COVINGTON, Ky. — Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, a Madison urologist, has been elected president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.

His election capped the 120,000-member organization’s 43rd annual convention at the Cincinnati Marriott at RiverCenter and the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. More than 1,000 delegates from across the United States attended the convention.

“Today marks a sacred beginning — one that’s not only about taking oath, but about embracing purpose,” said Chakrabarty, who now leads the nation’s largest ethnic medical association and second-largest to the American Medical Association. “This stage is illuminated not just by lights, but by the commitment of every physician who’s journeyed with faith, resilience, and passion.

“With this new chapter, we honor our heritage, step forward with courage, and vow to lead with integrity.”

Chakrabarty said the AAPI must grow by providing opportunities to upcoming physicians within the organization.

“We must invest heavily in the medical student/residents and young physician section and give them leadership roles in mainstream AAPI,” he said. “Without them, there will be no AAPI in 20 years.”

Chakrabarty also said he plans to strengthen the organization by becoming more politically active.

“Our voices must be heard by the people making the laws,” he said. “AAPI must succeed in bringing to the forefront the many important health care issues facing the physician community and raising our voice unitedly before the U.S. lawmakers.

“Our membership is our strength – as the second largest medical association behind the AMA, we cannot stay silent any longer.”
