‘Maintain, Don’t Gain’ challenge helping to foster ‘health, well being’ during holidays

HUNTSVILLE — The city of Huntsville and Huntsville Hospital have teamed up for the 10th “Maintain, Don’t Gain” challenge to offer residents a fun and encouraging way to help maintain their weight and health through the upcoming holidays.

The six-week weight-maintenance initiative was created to help hospital employees and has evolved into a communitywide program that is part of the city’s Healthy Huntsville initiative. In the 10 years since the program began, participants have collectively lost more than 2 1/2 tons.

“We’re excited to again team up with Mayor (Tommy) Battle and the City of Huntsville on this impactful program that champions healthier lifestyles and provides valuable support for our community members as they work toward their wellness goals,” Huntsville Hospital CEO Jeff Samz said. “This initiative isn’t just about maintaining weight — it’s about fostering a culture of health and well-being throughout our city.

“Let’s make this year’s Maintain, Don’t Gain challenge the most successful one yet, and inspire even more people to take charge of their health this holiday season and beyond.”

Battle also weighed in on the initiative.

“With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s tempting to overindulge in all the delicious food and festivities,” he said. “But by making smart choices, we can enjoy the season without compromising our health or waistlines. We hope everyone will join this journey and start the new year feeling stronger and more energized.”

The challenge starts with registration and weigh-ins this week across Huntsville. Participants will weigh out at the same locations from Jan 2-10.

Those who complete both weigh-ins will receive a special participation prize as a thank-you for committing themselves to their health.
