McCarty announces re-election bid for Huntsville City School Board

HUNTSVILLE —  Huntsville City School Board member Holly McCarty is seeking re-election as the District 2 representative, she announced today.

The Huntsville municipal election is Aug. 25, 2026.

“I am proud of the progress we’ve already made, and look forward to continuing the momentum we’ve built together by improving achievement, creating opportunities for every learner, and investing in the future of all our schools and students through a comprehensive capital plan,” she said. “With the arrival of U.S. Space Command and continued expansion across Huntsville, we must be prepared to meet challenges associated with growth and be ready to meet the needs of every student.”

McCarty highlighted the district’s consistent academic progress as a point of pride.

“Our schools continue to excel, with steady growth reflected in our state report cards,” she said. “I will always listen to parents, support our teachers, and ensure taxpayer dollars are used responsibly. Making sure classrooms are funded and teachers have the resources they need to help students succeed remains one of my highest priorities.”

McCarty is a long-time volunteer at school events, fundraisers, book fairs, and teacher appreciation activities. She served on the PTA Board every year since her children were in elementary school, including multiple terms as PTA president at the elementary and junior high levels.

Beyond her service within the school system, McCarty is the president of the National Children’s Advocacy Center Board  and a former board member of the Huntsville-Madison County Library Foundation. She is also a founding member of the Women’s Philanthropy Society, an organization that provides high-impact grants to support women and children throughout the community.

A graduate of Grissom High School, McCarty earned a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University. She earned her law degree from Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham and served as a law clerk for the Presiding Judge of Jefferson County before spending nine years as a prosecutor in the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

Her husband of 30 years, Dr. Jim McCarty, is a radiation oncologist in Huntsville; both of their sons attended and graduated from Huntsville City Schools.
