MADISON — Long-time Madison resident Michael McKay has announced his intention to run for Madison City Council District 4.

He is the only announced candidate for the position. The municipal election is Aug. 26.

An accounting graduate of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, McKay works in the internal auditing department of a federal agency. He served on the Madison On Track 2045 advisory committee, is on the Madison Civic Awareness Academy and the Madison City Schools District Safety Committee.

“I am running because I think my professional background and my community involvement have positioned me to understand the needs of our growing community,” McKay said. “If elected, I will work with my colleagues to ensure successful implementation of the Madison on Track 2045 strategic plan, work to further enhance the city budget for quality of life projects (like improved parks, community facilities, and ball fields), and also serve as a watchdog for all taxpayer dollars spent, eliminating waste and unnecessary spending to streamline important projects.”

McKay and his wife Emily met at UAH and have two children.

“My wife and I chose to live in Madison for the same reason that so many families choose it: the quality of the school system,” he said. “It was very important to us that our two children had access to the best education possible, and we knew that Madison could offer that.

“Our kids are at Madison Elementary and Journey Middle now, and we couldn’t be happier with this excellent school system.”

McKay has served as a coach in Madison youth sports, was president and vice president of the Madison Elementary School PTA, and served on the board of his neighborhood HOA.
