MidCity District has received a 2026 Charter Award from the Congress for the New Urbanism, a prestigious recognition highlighting excellence in urban design, placemaking and community development.

The Charter Awards are considered among the top honors in the field, recognizing projects worldwide that reflect principles such as walkability, mixed-use development and vibrant public spaces.

MidCity was selected for its transformation of a former enclosed mall into a dynamic mixed-use destination featuring entertainment, dining, retail, residential living and community gathering spaces. The development’s emphasis on connectivity, sustainability and experiential design helped position it as a leading model for modern urban districts in the Southeast.

“This recognition speaks to the tireless work of so many hands that have brought MidCity to life,” said Ashleigh Walton, associate and team leader at Urban Design Associates. “UDA is honored to have been there from the start, shaping the vision for this thriving community.”

The project reflects a collaborative effort involving local government, master developer RCP Companies, designers, lenders and community stakeholders.

“This award from the CNU is an incredible honor,” said Nadia Niakossary, senior director of development for RCP Companies. “MidCity was built around a clear vision: to bring people together through thoughtful design, shared experiences, and a true sense of community for Huntsville. To see that vision acknowledged on this stage is deeply meaningful.”

MidCity is a $1.5 billion development includes attractions such as the Orion Amphitheater and continues to expand with plans for residential units, hotel space and additional office development.

Project leaders say the recognition places Huntsville among a global group of communities shaping the future of urban living through innovative design and community-focused development.
