MADISON — Leather protected prehistoric man from the elements.
It was used in 3000 B.C. to make boat sails, furniture, tents, and weapons. Because of its durability while also being soft and flexible, Egyptian women perfected wearing leather.
And, since the dawn of time, every civilization uses leather for footwear.
Today, Holtz Leather Co. is manufacturing leather in North Alabama for its Huntsville store, and its new location on Sullivan Street in Madison.
Founded by locals Rick and Coleen Holtz, the flagship store opened on Meridian Street in the old commissary at Lincoln Mill in Huntsville in 2017. The Holtzes ran a well-established e-commerce business for three years prior to that.
The demand for leather products today, especially with gift-giving season coming, has grown to include belts, wallets, handbags, briefcases, journals and portfolios; custom leather patch caps, hats and apparel; and unique gifts and rustic décor for every occasion.
Specializing in bison, steer and cowhide, Holtz Leather Co. makes makes its own leather, millwork, and pottery products at a 75,000 square-foot plant located near Gurley.
Other unique gifts and experiences that can be found at both stores is their Candle Bar where visitors can make their own candles; wood and metal gifts and décor made from Jack Daniel whisky barrels; and inhouse vessels and pottery – including pottery classes at the Huntsville store on Thursday nights.
