HUNTSVILLE – A weeks-long campaign to help keep drunk drivers off the road resulted in several arrests and dozens of citation, the Huntsville Police Department said.

The department wrapped up its participation in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which ran Aug. 15 through Tuesday.

Throughout the campaign, HPD’s DUI Task Force and patrol officers worked to keep the city’s roads safe, conducting traffic safety checkpoints and saturation patrols from 6 p.m. and 4 a.m., HPD said in a news release.

The coordinated effort resulted in:

  • 53 drivers arrested for driving under the influence
  • 551 citations and written warnings issued
  • 72 traffic accidents reported during enforcement hours, with 11 involving impaired drivers

“Keeping impaired drivers off the road is a real team effort,” said Chief Kirk Giles. “Thanks to the combined work of our DUI Task Force and patrol officers, we were able to make a real difference in roadway safety before summer ended.”
