MUSCLE SHOALS – The city of Muscle Shoals announced plans for a 66-acre mixed-use development that will include multi-sport athletic facilities and a complex with the ability to host indoor and outdoor events.
“We’re thrilled to announce a $65 million investment that promises to revolutionize the landscape of local sports, recreation, and the cultural scene,” Mayor Mike Lockhart said during a news conference Monday. “This transformative project is set to elevate our community’s sports infrastructure, while also creating a dynamic hub for music and entertainment tourism.”
Lockhart said the city-owned development at Sportsplex Drive, “has been in the works for over two years.”
Adjacent to major retailers, the space will include indoor and outdoor facilities large enough to host regional tournaments. Sportsplex Drive is just off U.S. 43/72 between Lowe’s and the Comfort Inn and next to the North Alabama State Fairgrounds.
Major retail development is central to the concept of the site, and plans include significant space to be built out as the site develops, Lockhart said.
The project is expected to cost $65 million, and engineering and design work will begin immediately. The architecture and engineering firm Goodwyn Mills and Cawood (GMC) will assist with development of the site. The city also worked with GMC in 2023 to develop the its first comprehensive master plan.
Muscle Shoals is in northwest Alabama along the Tennessee River in a two-county region known as the Shoals.
Since its founding in 1923, Muscle Shoals has been recognized nationally for the Tennessee Valley Authority, and “Muscle Shoals music.” Today, Muscle Shoals is a thriving town in the heart of the Shoals and is known as a family-friendly place for our residents to live, work, and play.
