HUNTSVILLE — Huntsville Utilities has been recognized on a national level by the American Public Power Association for its commitment to ensuring exceptional electric reliability in the Rocket City.
The Washington, D.C.-based trade group represents more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities across the country.
“I’m proud of the work Huntsville Utilities’ employees put into providing reliable service to our community every day,” said Wes Kelley, president/CEO of Huntsville Utilities. “While we appreciate this award, we recognize that our work is never done, and we will strive to improve our performance each year.”
In 2023, the average outage time for an electric utility in the U.S. was 148 minutes. Huntsville Utilities’ average outage time was just 65 minutes.
“It’s encouraging to see year after year that public power’s track record for providing highly reliable service is backed up by data,” said PPA Director of Research and Development Paul Zummo. “These utilities are the best of the best when it comes to keeping the lights on. And these communities should be proud of their local power providers and appreciate the hard work that goes into earning this recognition.”
APPA helps electric utilities track power outage and restoration data through its subscription-based eReliability Tracker service. Once per year, APPA’s Reliability Team compares this data to national statistics tracked by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all types of electric utilities.
Huntsville Utilities is a not-for-profit, public utility owned by the City of Huntsville, serving the residents of Huntsville and Madison County.
The utility has approximately 223,000 electric; 108,000 water; and 63,000 natural gas customers.
