Drivers on Interstate 565 should expect nighttime lane closures over the next week as the $29 million widening project in Madison moves into its next phase.
Weather permitting, single-lane closures are planned on four to five nights as contractor Wiregrass Construction relocates concrete barriers and prepares to shift traffic.
Eastbound barriers are scheduled to be moved Wednesday and Thursday nights, Aug. 12-13. Westbound barriers will be relocated Sunday and Monday nights, Aug. 16-17, with additional work possible Tuesday night, Aug. 18.
Work will begin around 7 p.m. each evening and conclude by approximately 6 a.m. the following morning. State troopers will assist with traffic control.
Since the widening project began in fall 2024, concrete barriers have cordoned off the median of I-565 from Exit 7 at County Line Road to Bradford Creek, between Exit 8 at Glenn Hearn Boulevard and Exit 9 at Wall Triana Highway.
With much of the inside widening in that section substantially complete, the barriers will be moved to areas where work remains, including the outside shoulder near Exit 7 and the median near Exit 9.
Drivers eastbound will also see a significant traffic pattern change. The current rightward lane shift will be replaced with a shift to the left. Crews will remove existing pavement markings and install new striping and markers to guide traffic through the new configuration.
The project is adding a third travel lane in each direction through the corridor and includes widening two sets of bridges.
Work is continuing on the I-565 bridges over Bradford Creek near Exit 9, where crews last week installed girders for the final spans. The narrow work area between the bridges required those westernmost spans to be constructed last.
ALDOT anticipates work on the bridges at Intergraph Way and the Norfolk Southern railroad will resume this fall after the Bradford Creek bridge work is completed.
