Nighttime lane closures planned for North Parkway

HUNTSVILLE — The signs are all around us. And, some are on North Memorial Parkway in Huntsville and will be removed.

The Alabama Department of Transportation said there will be closures of the Parkway (U.S. 231/431) at Mastin Lake Road overnight Friday in both directions to remove the overhead signs. This is the intersection just south of Alabama A&M University.

The work is part of the three-year, $34 million overpass construction project.

Weather permitting, the single-lane closures will begin about 10 p.m. Friday and conclude
about 3 a.m. Saturday, ALDOT said. In addition, there will be brief stoppages of all traffic at times when signs or structures need to be moved over the travel lanes.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed and be prepared to merge. The department urged motorists to drive with caution in the work zone.

This week, Rogers Group, the contractor on the project, has positioned temporary barriers on the southbound outside shoulder from Gilbreath Road to Mastin Lake Road. This is to prepare for construction of the southbound service road extension. Work on the northbound shoulder began in June.

When both service roads are mostly complete, traffic will be shifted to the service roads while the overpass and mainline are constructed in the center of the existing highway, ALDOT said.
