No ordinary ‘Joe,’ stadium nominated for Best New, Renovated Sports Venue

HUNTSVILLE From a rundown eyesore a couple years ago to a crown jewel of the city of Huntsville, Joe Davis Stadium has undergone an amazing transformation.

And the work on the sports facility has not gone unnoticed.

The Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium, the home of Huntsville City Football Club, has been nominated for the 2023 SportsTravel Award for Best New or Renovated Sports Venue. The stadium is one of six venues nominated for the award.

Voting is available here and runs through Sept. 8. The winner of the award will be announced Oct. 4 at TEAMS ’23 in the Palm Beaches of Florida.

“Being nominated for the 2023 SportsTravel Award for Best New or Renovated Sports Venue is not just an accolade; it is a testament to the vision and commitment poured by Huntsville City FC and the Mayor’s Office into the Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium,” said Chad Emerson, managing director of Business Operations for Huntsville City FC. “In just its infancy since its re-opening in May, ‘The Joe’ has woven itself into the very fabric of Huntsville’s cultural and recreational tapestry.

“It’s not merely a stadium; it’s an emblem of community spirit and unity built for the joy of Huntsvillians and the greater North Alabama community.”

The Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium, the previous home of Minor League Baseball’s Huntsville Stars, is the only venue nominated for the award that previously and currently hosts different professional sports.

“It is a beautiful stadium and great addition to the sports venues portfolio in Huntsville,” said Mark Russell, executive director of the Huntsville Sports Commission. “Its ability to accommodate a variety of sports is a unique quality and a huge asset for sports tourism in our city.”

The stadium, which can hold more than 6,000 fans, hosts Huntsville City FC, and will soon host high school football and other events.

“It’s wonderful that our local high school football teams have the opportunity to play in a stadium suited for a professional soccer team,” Russell said.

Those interested in hosting their next event at the stadium can make a request here.

“Whether you’re a die-hard sports enthusiast or someone looking for a delightful evening out with family and friends, the stadium promises an experience that transcends the ordinary,” Emerson said. “Its accessibility, modern amenities, and versatility to welcome all sort of events make it more than worthy of being named the Best New or Renovated Sports Venue.”

The next chance fans can visit the Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium is Sunday when Huntsville City FC hosts Inter Miami II at 6 p.m. Tickets for the match can be purchased here.

“We urge everyone to go vote for ‘The Joe’ by Sept. 8 for this honor,” Emerson said. “By casting their vote, fans are not just voting for a venue, they are voting for a legacy, for countless shared memories, and for the continued growth and enrichment of Huntsville and North Alabama’s entertainment landscape.”
