North Alabama cities participating in Make Music Day

HUNTSVILLE – Known as the summer solstice, June 21 is the longest day of the year and marks the onset of summer. It is also Fête de la Musique – Make Music Day – a worldwide music festival held on the summer solstice every year.

Huntsville, Decatur, Florence, Gadsden, Gulf Shores, and Montgomery will celebrate and promote the natural music maker in everyone, regardless of age or skill level.

Huntsville, along with Boston, Detroit, and San Diego, will be participating for the first time since before the pandemic; and Alabama joins Connecticut, Hawaii, Vermont, and Wisconsin in organizing statewide Make Music celebrations, encompassing thousands of music-making opportunities nationwide.

This year, the Huntsville Music Office has put together more special events to draw even greater numbers of musicians and appreciators into the fun.

There will also be a chance to honor Rock & Roll inductee Stevie Wonder in song.

Huntsville will see every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional – of every musical persuasion, pour onto streets, parks, plazas, sidewalks and porches across the city, to share music with friends, neighbors, and strangers.

Whether you’re in a band, a solo artist, a child, a senior, a saxophonist or even a thereminist, everyone can perform, and Make Music Huntsville venues can be found anywhere.

For as little as 15 minutes, turn your porch, the sidewalk in front of your retail space, business campus or parking lot into a venue for musicians to perform.

All of it is free and open to the public.

More than 4,000 live events are planned around the country, including statewide celebrations.

Last year, the Make Music Day festival saw more than 100 concerts in cities across the country.

Making its debut in New York in 2007, Make Music Day is celebrated by hundreds of millions of people having spread quickly.

Make Music Day is coordinated by the nonprofit Make Music Alliance – #MakeMusicDay.
