MONTGOMERY — Doctors with the Medical Association of the State of Alabama are urging Alabamians to safely dispose of their expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at three sites across the Tennessee Valley this weekend.
Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, held twice each year as a way to encourage people to rid their homes of unneeded medications.
“Those old, unwanted or expired prescription drugs too often become a gateway to addiction or accidental overdose,” said Dr. George Koulianos, president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. “Back Day is a safe, convenient and responsible way to permanently remove these drugs so they can never be misused or abused.”
There were more than 1,300 overdose-related emergency room visits by Alabamians in June, the association said. By participating in Take Back Day, people can play an important role in preventing drug abuse and safeguarding others from accidental poisoning or overdose.
The three collection points, which are open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in North Alabama are:
- Cullman Police Department, 601 2nd Avenue NE
- Hartselle Police Department, 150 Chestnut Street NW
- Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, 102 East Laurel Street, Scottsboro
