A new partnership between Athens Main Street and the Limestone County Commission aims to restore and reimagine the courthouse grounds in downtown Athens following significant storm damage in late 2024.

The agreement formalizes a joint effort to rebuild the lawn surrounding the Limestone County Courthouse, which was heavily impacted when an EF-1 tornado struck the area on Dec. 28, 2024. The storm destroyed a century-old oak tree and more than 6,000 square feet of tree canopy.

“This partnership reflects what makes Limestone County special,” said Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly. “When something knocks us down, we don’t just rebuild; we build better. The courthouse lawn has been the heart of this community for generations, and this agreement is our commitment to ensuring it remains that way for generations to come.”

Plans developed by Athens Main Street, in collaboration with design partners Brad Mallette of AMBL Studios and Will Hargrove of Alta Planning + Design, call for a redesigned public space that preserves the site’s historic character while enhancing its functionality.

Proposed features include terraced lawn seating designed for festivals and gatherings, new native shade trees such as oaks and dogwoods, improved pedestrian pathways and updated furnishings. The design also emphasizes maintaining clear sightlines to the historic courthouse and incorporating materials like limestone to complement the surrounding architecture.

“The courthouse lawn isn’t just a piece of property; it’s where this community has gathered to celebrate, to mourn, to reflect, and to come together for more than a century,” said Athens Main Street Executive Director Tere Richardson. “This agreement means we’re moving forward together with intention and with the full support of the county behind us.”

Officials said sustainability will be a key component of the project, with plans to incorporate native plantings to improve ecological health and use locally sourced materials where possible.

Once completed, the revitalized space is expected to serve as a central venue for community events, including festivals, performances and local vendors, while also supporting economic activity in downtown Athens.
