FLORENCE – With an eye on providing infrastructure to his constituents, State Rep. Phillip Pettus is running to retain his District 1 seat in the Alabama House.
“Our people deserve good roads, safe neighborhoods, and strong schools — and they deserve a government that does more with less,” said Pettus in a news release announcing his candidacy. “That’s what I’ve delivered, and that’s what I’ll keep fighting for.”
Pettus said he has made infrastructure a top priority, supporting critical investments in roads, bridges, and broadband that have helped connect and revitalize communities across North Alabama.
At the same time, he worked to pass responsible, conservative budgets — cutting waste while ensuring essential services such as education, public safety, and veterans’ programs are funded.
“As your representative, I’ve fought to protect your hard-earned dollars and defend the conservative values that make our state strong,” said Pettus. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done, but there’s more to do — and I’m ready to continue delivering for the people of District 1.”
In 2024, Pettus sponsored and passed a statewide bill capping property tax increases, ensuring Alabama families are protected from sudden spikes in property taxes. Now law, the cap on property tax increases went into effect in 2025 and prohibits property taxes from increasing more than 7% in a year.
Pettus also authored and passed a local bill specifically exempting seniors in Lauderdale County from property tax increases, helping Lauderdale seniors better manage inflation and a rising cost of living.
A retired Alabama State Trooper and longtime resident of Lauderdale County, Pettus has served in the Alabama House of Representatives since 2014. He is a graduate of Rogers High School and the Alabama State Trooper Academy. Pettus and his wife Mary are members of Atlas Church of Christ in Killen.
