Publix Charities donates $100,000 to Food Bank of North Alabama

HUNTSVILLE- The Food Bank of North Alabama, which has seen a marked increase in food insecurity around the area, recently received a sizeable donation from Publix Super Market Charities.

The $100,000 gift will go toward transportation for the Food Bank’s mobile pantry program and other direct services.

“We are so grateful to Publix Charities for their donation,” said Shirley Schofield, CEO of the Food Bank of North Alabama. “For 40 years we have served the community and support like this helps the Food Bank acquire the resources to ensure people have enough nutritious food.

“This investment will impact children, veterans, seniors, and working families for generations.”

Publix CEO Kevin Murphy emphasized the significance of the partnership with the Food Bank of North Alabama.

“At Publix, we believe providing food for our neighbors in need is our greatest opportunity to give back, and doing so is at the heart of our philanthropic efforts,” said Murphy. “We’re also grateful to Publix Super Markets Charities for its continued commitment to helping people experiencing food insecurity.

“Publix and Publix Charities’ continued work with food banks across the Southeast provides vital resources and nourishment to better the lives of individuals in our communities.”

Since 2021, Publix Charities has given $525,000 to the food bank.

The Food Bank said it has seen a 48% increase in the need for food assistance in Madison County since last October, and a 28% increase in the rest of its 11-county coverage area that spans from Florence to Cullman to Fort Payne.

It is currently on pace to distribute 15 million pounds of food – equivalent to 12.5 million meals – in its 2024 fiscal year, a record for the non-profit organization.
