Rain-delayed drainage improvements project to prompt closing of U.S. 31 in Athens

(ALDOT contributed)

ATHENS — Rain delays affect sports and other events.

They also affect road work and that’s what the Alabama Department of Transportation had to deal with in Athens last week.

ALDOT originally planned to complete improvements at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Alabama Highway 99/Elm Street in Athens but rescheduled the work to Tuesday due to inclement weather.

The work will restart about 8 a.m. Tuesday and ALDOT anticipates reopening U.S. 31 about 3 p.m.

U.S. 31 northbound will be closed between Highway 99 and I-65. Traffic intending to travel north on U.S. 31 will be rerouted to U.S. 72 and I-65.
