HUNTSVILLE – It was the deadliest battle involving American soldiers since the Vietnam War and is known as the Black Hawk Down Incident.
Next month, the Redstone-Huntsville AUSA Chapter will honor the legacy of the Battle of Mogadishu with two deeply moving events – “An Evening in Mogadishu: Remembering Black Hawk Down” and “A Legacy Remembered: The Families of Black Hawk Down.”
The events come more than 30 years since the Battle of Mogadishu, a fierce 1993 urban conflict in Somalia that claimed the lives of 18 American soldiers.
No battle since the Vietnam War had killed so many U.S. troops; the casualties included 73 soldiers wounded.
Mike Durant of Madison was at the center of the 1993 “Black Hawk Down” incident which remains one of the most intriguing war stories in modern American history.
While on mission at the Battle of Mogadishu during the Somali Civil War, the Black Hawk helicopter he was piloting crashed after being struck by an RPG, which led to Durant being captured by Somali militia forces. The incident’s lone American survivor, Durant was held captive for 11 days. Upon being freed, Durant continued his service as he went on to resume flying for the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
In 2006, Durant – a Purple Heart recipient – authored “In the Company of Heroes: The Personal Story Behind Black Hawk Down,” which provides an intimate account of the events that occurred.
Durant served as a special operations pilot for the regiment from 1988 to 2001, when he retired from the Army as chief warrant officer 4.
Next month’s events aim to preserve and honor the voices of those who fought – and those who waited for them at home.
