Rivers signs with Colts; assigned to practice squad but may play Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS — What a difference a few days make.

Just 10 days ago, Philip Rivers was coaching Fairhope’s St. Michael Catholic High in their AHSAA Class 4A state semifinal game against Jackson.

Today, the 44-year-old Athens native worked out with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and eventually was signed to their practice team.

And there’s a chance the future Hall of Famer may play Sunday against the Seahawks.

Rivers, who threw for more than 63,000 yards in his NFL career that spanned 2004-20, last played in the NFL for the Colts, leading them to the playoffs – their last appearance in the postseason.

Now a grandfather, Rivers is making his NFL return due to a series of injuries that struck the Colts (8-5):

  • Backup Anthony Richardson is out due to an orbital fracture from a freak pregame accident;
  • Starter Daniel Jones was lost for the season when he tore his Achilles last Sunday;
  • Third team quarterback Riley Leonard, replacing Jones, injured his knee in last Sunday’s game. He is questionable for the Seattle game. Ironically, Leonard is from Fairhope; he attended Fairhope High School, across town from St. Michael Catholic.
