DECATUR — A Nashville contractor is the apparent low-bidder for an I-65 resurfacing project in Morgan County, the Alabama Department of Transportation announced.
ALDOT opened bids today for the project to resurface 23.4 miles of I-65, including the entirety of the interstate through Morgan County.
Of three bidders, contractor Rogers Group submitted the apparent low bid of $16,120,000. ALDOT said it anticipated bids between $14.7 and $17.9 million.
Rogers also was the apparent low-bidder for projects in Franklin County and Cullman County, ALDOT said.
The Morgan County project includes milling, resurfacing, traffic stripe, and guardrail replacement on I-65 from Hurricane Creek, north of Vinemont in Cullman County, to about one mile south of the I-565 interchange (Exit 340) in Limestone County.
The project will be split into two smaller segments and resurfaced in phases. The winning contractor will resurface the segment north of SR-36 in Hartselle first. Then, next year, they will resurface the segment south of SR-36.
Paving will take place at night to limit impacts during peak travel times. ALDOT will restrict interstate lane closures to the hours of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Construction is pending bid review and award of the contract. ALDOT anticipates work starting this summer and reaching completion in late 2026.
Additionally, the project includes raising two bridges — the overpasses carrying Parker Road in Hartselle and East Upper River Road in Priceville — to improve clearance on I-65. Each bridge will close to traffic for several weeks during this process.
According to traffic counts, about 43,000 vehicles travel I-65 daily in northern Cullman County. Traffic volume rises to about 54,000 vehicles daily in Limestone County just north of the Tennessee River.
This segment of I-65 was last resurfaced in 2015. The pavement required extensive maintenance following recent winter freezes.
ALDOT also opened bids for three other north Alabama resurfacing projects today:
- Resurfacing 5.6 miles of Alabama Highway 20 in Lawrence County from west of Kirby Road in Hillsboro to the Morgan County line received three bids. Wiregrass Construction submitted the apparent low bid of $2,915,437. ALDOT anticipated bids between $3.3 and $4 million.
- Resurfacing 5.6 miles of Alabama Highway 24 in Franklin County from east of Alabama 243 in Russellville to Franklin County Road 83 received three bids. Rogers Group submitted the apparent low bid of $3,072,869. ALDOT anticipated bids between $3.5 and $4.3 million.
- Resurfacing 1.4 miles of U.S. 278 in Cullman County from County Road 401 to County Road 400, west of Cullman received four bids. Rogers Group submitted the apparent low bid of $1,007,700. ALDOT anticipated bids between $1.2 and $1.4 million.
