HUNTSVILLE – The makeover at Stoner Park continues with space for roller skating next on the agenda at the northeast Huntsville recreation site that includes Stoner Field.
The City of Huntsville Planning Commission green-lighted the addition. The project was included in a package for improvements at the park passed by the Huntsville City Council.
Groundbreaking for the roller skate rink, expected to cost in the range of $2 million to $2.5 million, is expected to begin in June.
“It’s a part of the overall redevelopment of the park,” Devyn Keith, District 1 representative on the city council, told 256 Today. “I think the actual contract will go to bid sometime this month.”
The rink will be inside a pavilion with cooling fans.
“It will be very top of the line,” Keith said. “It was really pushed by a group called Skate Huntsville for about a year, year and a half.”
The redevelopment of the park is being done in phases and is expected to have a total price tag of between $8 million and $10 million. The work will encompass anywhere from a year to two.
Once the makeover is complete, Keith said, “it’ll be a totally different location.”
