Scottsboro Starbucks employees unionize

SCOTTSBORO — A vote to unionize at a Scottsboro Starbucks was affirmed after a National Labor Relations Board decision Monday, according to the North Alabama Area Labor Council.

“After a thorough investigation of the four challenged ballots in the Scottsboro Starbucks union election, the NLRB concluded that one of them was eligible, breaking the tie in favor of the union,” a news release from the council said. The original vote was 8 for unionizing and 8 opposed with four votes challenged. With the NLRB ruling, the vote was 9-8.

Scottsboro Starbucks workers now become the second unionized location in Alabama. Employees at a Birmingham Starbucks recently voted 27-1 in favor of unionizing.

“It’s never easy fighting against a billionaire boss who is dead set on doing everything in his power to keep you from having a voice on the job, including flagrantly violating the law,” Council Secretary-Treasurer Jacob Morrison said. “But it’s always worth it.

“Starbucks dogged resistance to respecting the law and the will of their workers only proves the need for unionization at this company.”

The North Alabama Area Labor Council is the regional body of the AFL-CIO in Blount, Cullman, Jackson, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, and Morgan counties. The unions represent North Alabama workers from machinists to stage hands to rocket scientists to iron workers.
